PIA Longhorns started in 2006 when I took a day to go along with a friend on his way to buy some longhorn calves. I am always interested in learning more about topics that I am unfamiliar with, and Texas Longhorns fit the bill. Although I was a long-time orthopedic surgeon in the Wichita area, I come from farming and ranching roots, and have always enjoyed taking time to get back to those roots. A cattle ranch seemed to be a great way to spend one of my few days away from the medical world. It was a fascinating experience, it hooked my interest, and though I may not have realized it at the time, the beginnings of a new career change were born that day! I am now a retired surgeon and full time rancher and couldn't be more content with my life.

Our herd started with the two young heifers that came home with me that day. The following year, I bought two calves and two more cows along with one bull calf, and we were on our way. That bull calf, Buster, became our first herd sire and we now manage a herd of over 100 longhorn.
